![]() ![]() Received these photos from Tommy Wright, former resident of our
community. Tommy retired from the military and enjoys ice fishing.
Thanks for the photos and for your service to our country. I was
curious about the photos, so Tommy wrote:
The pictures are of an old gold mining town of Victor. Its about 10 miles from Cripple Creek the site of the Colorado Gold Rush of 1889/90. It made many of the old prospectors rich. They brought the ore down the east and south sides of Pikes Peak and what is now Cheyenne Mountain to Old Colorado City 5 miles west of present day Colorado Springs via narrow gage rail about 40 miles and to present day Canyon City 35 miles south of the Springs. They mined the gold via shaft mine and some small tunnel. It was all Hard Rock mining and they used all hand augers blew the rock down and took it be smelted at 2400 degrees. At one time Cripple creek and Victor was home to over 55,000 people. The gold petered out after about 10 years. They started mining again using modern methods about 20 years ago. In the old days they took about 3 million ounces ore. The new mine now takes out over a million a year by bleaching the rock with the use of cyanide . They get the rock just like they do strip mining in KY. Skaggway Lake was build by one the rich men. His plan was to run the water down Phantom Cayon to the south to Cayon City to make electricity which he planned to send back to Cripple Creek to power lights equipment. Problem was that all the water froze in winter in the cayon so bad and for so long during winter and cost to much to keep open the plan was abandoned in 1897. Freddy you should see the view in winter from this area---snow capped mountains as far as the eye can see. Next time I go up I'll take some more pics of the mountains. Sorry---did not mean to give you a history lesson (haha). PS
victor is still like it was then and Cripple Creek ia a Gambling town with multiple million dollar clubs that takes in more them 24 million a year. The clubs are like Vegas but are in the old town buildings. There are only two completely new building. Victor has no gambling that why its still the same. Most of the old mining towns of Colorado have become ski towns and tourist places.
